Abstract

The IPS Expert Group on Growing Media and Energy Peat sent inquiries to the main countries extracting and using peat for various purposes. The aim was to collect updated figures on the amounts of volumes of peat used and the areas in peat extraction. The data was derived mainly from national associations representing peat extraction. Some information was collected directly from peat extracting companies. Also expert estimations and official statistics were utilized. The share of peat used for growing media and other purposes is increasing while peat for energy is decreasing. The peat extraction area and the total volume of peat produced in the EU are in decline.
