The International Peatland Society is seeking to recruit a Secretary General as its Chief Executive.
The person appointed will take the lead in implementing strategies established by the Responsible Peatland Management and Wise Use documents, developing new services and new sources of income, and leadership in new strategic directions and policy development.
The appointee will be the representative of the IPS in regional and international affairs. She or he will be expected to reinforce existing partnerships, especially with industry, NGOs and international agencies; and to form new ones with organizations and institutes with similar interests and objectives.
The appointee will oversee and encourage National Committees, Commissions, Expert Groups and individual members and help them to organize conferences and other events. She or he will work to increase membership of the organization.
The appointee will have overall responsibility for the governance and administration of the organization, and shall be responsible for ensuring the smooth running of the Society in accordance with its Statutes and Internal Regulations, and for the implementation of decisions taken by the Annual Assembly and the Executive Board.
These responsibilities will include finance and budget, and responsibility for the IPS Secretariat which is located in Jyväskylä.
The Secretary General reports directly to the President and the Executive Board.
The successful candidate will have:
• Demonstrated leadership ability
• A relevant professional education
• Project management experience
• Relationship skills in dealing with stakeholders, an ability to win people over, and a feeling for different cultures
• Willingness to travel
• Fluency in English
It will be of benefit to the successful candidate to have:
• A knowledge of organizations that provide funding for projects and an ability to liaise with these organizations
• Experience in implementing corporate strategy, identifying long-term goals and achieving objectives
• An understanding of the social, economic and environmental values associated with peatlands and peat
• The ability to relate to the media, including social media
• Experience of finance and organizational administration
• Other languages
