Title: The Specific Context of Peatland Restoration in Canada: Insights from Recent Research
Summary: Over more than 30 years, a research partnership between the Peatland Ecology Research Group and the Canadian horticultural peat industry has developed an efficient ecological restoration method: the Moss Layer Transfer Technique (MLTT). Applied to over 2,900 hectares, scientific monitoring of the restored sites has demonstrated that this technique successfully establishes plant communities dominated by Sphagnum mosses.
As new challenges emerge for the restoration of Canadian peatlands, ongoing research is continuously addressing them. In this webinar, four PhD students will present their research on various topics, including the long-term and large-scale monitoring of restored Sphagnum-dominated peatlands and their comparison to reference ecosystems. We will explore the role of pools in restored peatlands on biodiversity. Additionally, we will gain insights from a specific case study on fen restoration to enhance minerotrophic restoration approaches. Finally, we will examine the geo-engineering approach of strengthening enzymic latch mechanism, a method hypothesized to sustainably manage peatlands by reducing carbon emissions.
