From Gysinge via Riga to Belém
The year 2025 was a busy and productive one for the International Peatland Society. IPS successfully continued its work as an international platform bringing together science, practice, policy and industry around peatlands.
One of the main highlights was the IPS Annual Convention in Gysinge, Sweden in June. The meeting attracted participants from a broad range of countries and professional backgrounds. As in previous years, it demonstrated the value of IPS as a forum for open, evidence-based dialogue between researchers, practitioners, industry representatives and policymakers.
IPS also continued to develop its webinar series. These monthly online events have become an important way for members to exchange knowledge and remain connected internationally. The sessions covered a wide range of scientific, policy and practical topics and attracted stable participation throughout the year.
International engagement remained a key part of IPS’ work. The Society contributed to discussions related to UNFCCC COP30, Ramsar wetland policy processes and other global initiatives. IPS also remained involved in international projects and other scientific cooperation, helping ensure that peatland expertise is reflected in research, policy and practical guidance. IPS delegates also took part in National Committee meetings, the Baltic Peat Producers Forum in Riga, and many other peat- and peatland-related events during the year.
Publications and communication channels continued to support this work. Through Peatlands International, Peatland Snippets, the scientific journal Mires and Peat, our website, social media and the IPS online shop, the Society shared information, promoted cooperation and reached audiences beyond the membership.
IPS also continued to support early-career professionals through its grants, at events and via other opportunities to participate in our international network.
Overall, the Society’s continues to rely on the commitment, expertise and support of its members, National Committees, Commissions and partners worldwide.
Financially, IPS remained on a stable footing in 2025. Membership contributions were again the main income source, supported by project and publication income. Careful financial management and existing reserves help maintain continuity between the International Peatland Congresses held every four years.
The Executive Board will continue to explore additional funding opportunities to support IPS’ engagement in the future.
The full IPS Annual Report 2025, together with reports from our Commissions and National Committees, will be published in March and will provide more detailed information on the year’s activities.
IPS looks forward to continuing this work in 2026 together with its members and partners. We thank everyone who supports IPS – through their time, expertise and engagement.
Every helping hand and every contribution count.
