SUMMARY

Technique of cellulose oxygen isotope analysis was applied to the peats from the Rishiri Island, Japan, in the Sea of Japan. Sphagnum remains were carefully separated and their cellulose was purified by lipid extraction and subsequent lignin decomposition processes.
