Abstract

This poster displays key methods and strategies for Integrated Tropical Peatland Management. To ensure the sustainability of peatlands, the elements of water, soil and vegetation in a given area must always be in balance. It is best to leave untouched peatlands alone. Some of their rich resources can be harvested without affecting the peatland ecosystem. Peatland areas which have already been cleared must be managed to ensure their sustainability and mitigate carbon emissions. The poster suggests sustainable use of peatlands and promotes the key elements to rehabilitating degraded peatlands, namely hydrological restoration, reforestation and fire prevention. An integrated approach to managing peatlands areas would ideally ensure economic prosperity, environmental sustainability and societal wellbeing.
