American Peat Technology (APT), located in Minnesota, USA, has been manufacturing granular products from peat since 2003. The company’s primary product is a microbial carrier that is used to convey beneficial microorganisms to row crops. That product, called BioAPT, is used on 6-10 million acres (2.5 – 4 million hectares) of pulse crops annually. APT’s water treatment product, called APTsorb, is used to sorb heavy metals from contaminated water such as stormwater and mine dewatering. Other uses of APT’s granular products include whiskey finishing and amendments for stronger and more resilient turf and horticulture. This presentation will describe APT’s business model, method of harvest, manufacturing process, reclamation efforts and future initiatives.

Bio:
Peggy Jones is the vice-president of research and development at American Peat Technology (APT). She has been employed by APT since 2007. Early in her APT career, she was instrumental in the development of the APTsorb III product, a high-end water remediation media. More recently, she was involved in the development of BioAPT Beads spherical peat, a disruptive technology in the agricultural inoculants market. In her role, Jones has conducted pilot treatments at two mining sites, each time proving the efficacy of granular peat to treat mine-impacted water. Jones also manages APT’s permits, ensuring compliance with multiple permits across several state agencies.
Jones received her M.S. in Environmental Studies from the University of Montana where she studied the ecology of boreal bogs. Although she is an avid fan of bog ecology, she is equally enthusiastic about the economic and environmental benefits of adding value to the unique and ubiquitous peat resource.
