Peatlands are nowadays at the centre of EU attention for many reasons. A wealth of policies exists or are in the pipeline to address peatlands’ relation to climate change, biodiversity or water quality. These policies appear under different headings and lack a holistic approach. There are also trade-offs between some of the policies, and this seems to be hard to admit.
Von der Leyen’s 2nd Commission is set out to come with many new initiatives that are bound to have important relevance to peatlands and their management. Or to the lack of it. This is a good time to take stock of what we already have in place.
